Movie trivia. Name the movie and the character who said this: "Fay, this is scrumptious! Is this corn hand-shucked?"I am trying to buy as much of our food from local farmers as possible. It’s been a slow process finding the resources—but as you know, seek and ye shall find. Eventually we'll be growing as much as we can on less than 1/3 acre neighborhood lot. I want the kids to know where food comes from and have a relationship with the garden. I want them to be involved in the process of planting, watering, picking and preparing or perserving food.
I have a friend that unknowingly got us hooked on fresh eggs. I’ve never seen a more beautiful range of tans and browns in my life. We’ve found a local butcher that supplies fresh meat and we love the neighborhood farmer's market for seasonal produce. Now we’re also enjoying carrots, tomatoes, and the precious few blackberries from our own meager garden. The blackberries rarely even make it into the house!
Thanks to a neighbor that shares our passion for taking the gasoline out of our food, we got three dozen ears of fresh picked corn from a local farmer. Maya and Madison helped with the shucking. What we didn't eat right away we froze for future use!
This year we picked our own strawberries and the raspberries should be ripe soon! We'll make another trip for apples this fall and try to come up with more creative ways to process them all. Apple butter, cinnamon applesauce, apple crisp, and dried apples are our old favorites. I even found a recipe for coleslaw made with apples! And hopefully mom will make some crust for pies too! This year I’m investing in an apple peeler!
