Although the kids eat salad with an enthusiasm that I'd never expect for children, they do love croutons on their salad. I can't imagine why I ever spent money on croutons; this homemade version is fabulous and uses up our left over bread and whatever spices I have lying around. These are also very good on soup!
The amount of butter I use depends on how much bread I have. Today I used 2 sticks of butter for a very full, large baking sheet of bread cubes. Which is a lot. I probably could have cut that back to 1 1/2 sticks or maybe even less.
I also experiment with the amount of seasoning--this batch I added two tablespoons of parsley flakes and 1 heavy tsp. of onion powder.
Cut bread into 1/2 inch cubes.
Bake at 300 for 10 minutes.
Stir into melted butter and desired seasoning.
Bake for 30 minutes at 275.
Cool completely.
Store in a jar for up to 2 weeks.
