Fall Term, Week One, Day Five

End of one week! We made it. We had a few whines and do I have to's this morning. But Friday is a light reading load so we made it without too much scaring. (And they know that the alternative to school work is house work which no one wants to do. Weird.)

I’ve learned a lot about Madison this week. (1) Let her color while I read. Her narrations are amazingly detailed and include more than a repetition of the last sentence when I provide something to absorb her constant movement! I believe it takes all of her thought and energy to sit still that there is nothing left to give to actually listening to the story. Keeping her hands busy frees her mind. (2) Let her drop the “pointer finger” when she’s reading. Now here I thought the movement would help her. But again, it seems it takes all her concentration to use her index finger to point to the first letter of each word that she has little left for recalling known words, and less yet for sounding out new ones. If she losses her place, it's easy for me to jump in and provide that guidance when she needs it.

Overall I’m pleased with our week. I managed to re-establish our routines, complete all of our lessons, feed them minimal fast food, get them in bed at a decent hour, bath them when they need it, and get them out of the house and enjoying Mother Nature.
