Thank you, Tiany at Less of Me~More of Him, for hosting the Homeschool Open House. I've really enjoyed learning about how others homeschool. Go here to learn more.About Us: This is our second year of homeschooling and my style is much more unstructured than I ever thought I’d be comfortable with. After several tries, I’ve done away with the schedules that are linked to specific time blocks and we move at a very comfortable and relaxed routine. The times on our routines are guidelines that steer us through our day—but are never meant to dictate over the needs of my learners.
After trying two different curriculums we found Charlotte Mason and are following the Ambleside Online schedule. My 8-year-old is starting year 2 and my 6-year-old is starting year 1 this fall. We also have a nearly 5-year-old starting Handwriting Without Tears who listens in on much of the reading and always has a narrative to share (even if it’s not quite based in the actual text). Our 2-year-old is a handful who likes to be neck-deep involved in EVERYTHING. As an English major in college I love the literature based concept of CM and her gentle methods of short lessons and trained attention, formation of habits, and exact execution. We are enjoying Math-U-See for our math program.
Like many, we started out trying to duplicate school at home and soon found that just didn’t work for us. Our “school room” is now an awesome place to do crafts and projects but we have transitioned to doing our school work on the dining room table. Fill-in-the-blank workbooks and textbook tests zapped the joy out of learning for my kids, and for me. We’re focusing on the noble and inspired ideas found in quality literature and I’m learning as much or more than my students, I’m sure.
Our basic routine works like this:
7:30 Wake up and 5 things
8:00 Breakfast & cleanup — Bible story & memory verse
8:30 School Work
10:00 Snack
10:15 School Work
12:00 Lunch & cleanup — Read one poem each
12:45 Plus Two (two more chores chosen from list)
1:15 Specials
2:00 Naptime/DEAR time (Drop Everything And Read)
3:30 Free Play
4:30 Cleanup
5:30 Dinner & cleanup
6:30 Family and free time
7:30 Baths
8:30 Bed & read aloud time
