funny little thing

A funny little thing tripped up C with his math this week that I wasn't expecting. I had to teach him that the number proceeding the math problem was not a part of the problem. For example, he is doing lesson one in the Math-U-See Alpha book and the first lesson teaches how to "build" numbers with blocks and put them in their place value, up to the hundreds place. So when little C gets to problem number three and the number to build is "16" and the problem looks like this...

3. 16

...he thinks the number to build  316.

It's tricky anyway, because it doesn't have a number in the hundreds place. Add the problem number and there is no convincing him otherwise.

So what did I do? Well, his dad was sitting at the table with us. I just handed the book and the boy over to him.
