on family

"There is an instinct in a woman to love most her own child--and an instinct to make any child who needs her love her own." --robert brault

My dear friend shared this quote with me a week ago and I can't stop thinking about it. God is teaching me that I think too narrowly about who creates and defines family... God creates the family (Genesis) and He chooses what individuals make up a particular family (Ruth). It's not me. Although I can make what seem to be significant decisions and choices and "plan" my family, none of them are bigger than God (Proverbs 26:33). He is the one who created family. He is the one who adopts us as joints heirs with Christ and added me to His family (Romans 8, Ephesians 1). He sets the solitary into families (Psalm 68). He is father to the fatherless (Psalm 68).
