When we first moved here I had never heard of Aldi. I went once and turned my nose up at it. Now, however, I love Aldi. For the most part I buy our meat and produce elsewhere (except we got an awesome deal on a Butterball turkey for Thanksgiving and it turned out the best I ever made--and I've gotten some really good apples there too). But the other staples that the kids eat tons of I can save a lot of money on: whole wheat bread, buns, Popsicles, cereal, tortilla chips, granola bars, etc. They also have really good deals on baking supplies (flour, sugar, salt, etc.) and condiments (good for the "ketchup goes with everything" phase).
Now I must say that their theory is genius. I will only take a cart if I really need it and when I do I take it back to the entrance to get my quarter back. It's only a quarter, but it works. You never see a heap of carts taking up the good spaces in the Aldi lot. I also think ahead and take my own canvas bags. I have a few emergency Aldi plastic bags that I paid 10 cents for and believe you me I fold up those bags and save them for the next trip. It's only 10 cents but because I paid for it I'm more careful how I use it which means less garbage for a land fill and apparently cheaper prices at the checkout. I also think it's good for the kids to work together to bag the groceries and to consider alternative ways of grocery shopping.
