Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. Deuteronomy 6:4-8So we're out Christmas shopping at Lifeway, picking out a new Bible for Makenna. I overhear a women talking with the salesman about a particular Bible and she says, "Wow. You can't even tell that's a Bible. You wouldn't know by looking at it. Unless you open it. That's what my daughter needs. She's a school teacher." I guess the implication being her daughter could take this to school and not be singled out by the administration or otherwise for carrying a Bible.
I beg you, pull your kids close. When there is a quiet moment. When you're driving in the car. While tucking them in at night. Don't outsource this to the church. Don't wait for the youth group to do it. Don't leave this to the "professionals." Teach your children your faith. Train them. Mentor them. Tudor them. Study with them. Every chance you get. Start early. Start now. Our culture won't do it. You must. You don't need to be perfect--none of us are. You don't need to wait until you get this in order, or that other thing settled. Teach them from your failures. Share with them your regrets. If you're searching, take them with you. If you're not sure what you believe, start reading, start questioning. Find a church. And take your kids by the hand and take them with you.
