It's always good to come back after a weeklong break. I call it the magic week. We've done no formal schooling, but they've matured and changed and grown even just a little in that week and are ready to start their studies with a renewed vigor. I will admit that it was a little hard getting back to it knowing that Christmas is coming. After this week we'll have two more weeks to finish out our first 12 week term. I do look forward to the longer break and how they will have changed at the end of it.
Each week offers its own challenges. Some weeks dad has to work a lot. Others it's raining and we don't get outside as much as we'd like. This week, it's the stomach flu. I've found that you can continue the school day with a sick child: a little more slowly, perhaps, but it can be done. However, when mom's been up most of the night going from kid to kid trying desperately to contain whatever it is they scatter, running the washer and dryer non-stop, scrubing her hands and any surface the offending germs may have touched, and shooting distracted prayers heavenward that she and her dear husband are spared from this little bitty hell on earth, we may throw in the towel and just be sick. Sometimes you just gotta know when to cry uncle.
