Day two went quite smoothly. The girls knew what to expect and I could hardly keep up with them. Maddie did nearly all her math without help and I had to wrestle The Little Duke and Our Island Story from Makenna after we read our daily selection. She's used to greedily reading as long as she likes. Today, in fact, she ran to her room and locked herself in so she could keep reading. Nice try, Makenna. But this is exactly what we want! (For more information read Short Varied Lessons and Many Books.)
Makenna did her Science and some of her history reading independently and is probably capable of doing so more often than not. I’m thinking maybe I should have started her with Year 3, but I didn’t want to push her to the point of being too frustrated to do the work. For now I’m happy that she’s setting down good habits, loving the books and asking for more.
You never can pinpoint what will be an issue. There’s been a bit of mêlée over possession of the only highlighter in the house—the girls love marking off their list as they complete each item. I think the cost of a new highlighter is worth peace in the house.
