Charlie's Birth Day, Part II
It's no surprise that we got our room. I was a little miffed that I had to wait for several hours for an antibiotic to get in my system before they'd start induction. But my relief at not having to come back another day more than outweighed my annoyance. Charlie's induction was a little different than the others. I was far enough along already that they broke my water first and then added the pitocin for good measure afterward. I'm not really sure I needed the drugs as contractions started immediately on their own. Labor was something like 4 hours and I don't remember anything particularly interesting about it. I was in my room in record time and finally able to eat something at an hour that seemed reasonably like dinnertime. We choose to leave the epidural in—hoping that I'd get a shot at getting a tubal before going home. But things were so busy they couldn't guarantee me a slot with the anesthesiologist so I opted to take the epidural out (when it's not turned on, it's very uncomfortable). I was ready to go home the next day but we waited until Charlie had his circumcision (after which he screamed the most primal, animal squeal I've ever heard—he’s been screaming ever since). We went home as soon as we could the final day and (I swore I'd never disclose this last bit of information) we stopped by CVS on the way home and I took my 2-day-old baby into a public place. Gasp! You'll all be happy to know that I did cover him up with a baby blanket and gave Steve strict instructions to maintain a four foot perimeter around the baby at all times and to body check anyone who would attempt to actually touch him!
