Year End

We had our year-end assessment with Dr. Holinga (that women was sent straight from heaven to help homeschooling families!). The girls are doing great and I was so pleased that Maddie was actually reading by the time we made it to this appointment!

We have our plan in hand for next year, which we will start after our break this week—since we're planning to school from January to November. I'm in the process of ordering books and finding them along the way from my list that I keep on me at all times (Half-Priced Books—also sent straight from God!) We've selected our math program (Math-U-See) which, we were assured, will get us through high school and is supposed to produce good results in the SATs and ACTs.

I've planned a light schedule for the summer. We're enjoying our read-alouds together. We'll continue working on math. And Madison will start her first grade readers and do some concentrated work on her handwriting (as soon as the books come in).

Here is a layout of our full schedule that we'll start in the fall:

  • Fifty Famous Stories Retold by James Baldwin

  • George Washington by Ingri D’Aulaire
  • Buffalo Bill by Ingri D’Aulaire
  • Narrations will be required from these readings

Artist and Composer Study (a different artist/composer, or group, each term which Makenna and Madison will do together):

  • Artists: Da Vinci, Rembrandt, Grunwalde, and Van Eyck
  • Composers: Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Alexander Borodin, Modest Mussorgsky, George Frideric Handel, Camille Saint-Saens and Hector Berlioz

Makenna

Language Arts:

  • Various read-alouds and independent reading with narrations(I'll list these in another post for those that are interested)
  • Copywork
  • Dictation
