Toy Management that Really Works!

I took a little trip to Walmart, bought my weight in storage containers, and did some serious organizing. It only took six hours -- one of which the girls actually helped. I lined the boxes up in a row, gathered ALL their stuff from bedrooms, closets, and play room, and started sorting. Then I grouped like items together (because some of it takes up more than one box) and stacked them on the storage shelves in the storage room. Movies got put up as well. The only items they have access to 24/7 are books and paper/crayons/pencils/markers. On school days they are allowed to choose one type of toy (Barbies, Little People, babies, Legos, etc.) after school work and lunch. They have to agree as a group on the toy. During school time I pick out a toy for Charlie to play with nearby. On the weekends they can pick something after they get their chores done and have breakfast. Our new system seems to be working wonders! Here are the major benefits so far:

1. Fosters teamwork as they negotiate what to choose for the day.
2. Creates excitement over picking something new everyday.
3. Lessens boredom with the toys.
4. Eliminates distractions during school hours.
5. Simplifies clean up.
6. Provides motivation to complete school work and chores.
